Underline
Underline is a small app for the moment anxiety starts. It does not try to turn the alarm down. It asks what the alarm is guarding.
When it rings, the app asks one question at a time: What do you want here? Which part of that is yours to do? Is there anything it would have you do today? What exactly do you expect to happen, and when will you know? It logs the prediction. On the date you chose, it asks what happened.
Over weeks you get your own record: how often the alarm was right, and how much of what you want sits in other people’s hands.
When I see a man anxious, I say, What does this man want? If he did not want some thing which is not in his power, how could he be anxious? Epictetus, Discourses 2.13, tr. George Long (1877)
Your data
Everything you write stays in a database on your phone; the app has no account, no server and no analytics, and nothing is sent anywhere. The only way data leaves the device is if you export it yourself from Settings.
Not a treatment
Underline is a journaling and reflection tool. If anxiety is keeping you from sleeping, working or leaving the house, a doctor or therapist will do more than this app.
