Terms of Use

Effective date: October 9, 2026

These are the terms for using the Underline app. They are short because the app is simple: it runs on your phone, keeps your writing there, and has no account or service behind it.

Not medical advice

Underline is a journaling and reflection tool built on questions from ancient Stoic texts. It is not a medical device, not therapy, and not a treatment for anxiety or any other condition. It does not diagnose anything and nothing in it should be taken as medical, psychological or professional advice.

If anxiety is keeping you from sleeping, working or leaving the house, a doctor or therapist will do more than this app. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services or a crisis line now. In the United States you can call or text 988.

Use at your own discretion

You decide what to write and what to do with it. The app asks questions and shows you your own record; what you make of that is yours. Keep your own backup if the data matters to you: Settings has an export, and deleting the app deletes its data.

Your content

Everything you write in Underline is yours. We do not receive it, store it, or claim any rights to it. See the privacy policy.

No warranty

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not promise it will be free of errors, that notifications will always arrive, or that it will be available or supported indefinitely.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Matt Schulz / Reboot the Future is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app, including loss of data. If you paid for the app, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid.

Sources

Quotations in the app are from public-domain translations of Epictetus, Seneca and Diogenes Laertius, cited where they appear. The app’s own text is © Matt Schulz / Reboot the Future.

Changes

If these terms change we will post the new version here and update the effective date. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the new terms.
